The Painted Piano

Hello World!
Happy Saturday!  Okay, here she is.
Finally, the piano is finished.
Check out the shine and reflection.  Below is the mess I had to work with.

A lot of scratches and little chunks missing.  So, I sanded her and cleaned her before giving her two coats of paint.

You will notice on the book holder all of the gold had worn off.  See the marks right below the keys?  They are gone.  The wonders of sanding and paint.

Here's the book holder now.  I hand painted the lattice work with some pretty metallic paint I had on hand.  It just pops now!

This photo was taken from the entryway so you can see the reflection of the wall on the side of the piano.

Another close-up of the book holder.

 She is no longer dull.

Some of my Japanese dolls wait with a Jim Shore angel to greet my voice students.

Confession time:  I haven't painted the bench yet.  I'm not sure if I'm going to use it much longer.  It's really wonky and needs a little repair.  If I can't repair it, I may just put a pretty chair here.  And, of course, if I can repair the bench, she will be painted and the cushion will be recovered.

What do you think?  Pretty, no?  The process was pretty simple.
Sand
Clean
Paint Two Coats with the following:

I bought 1 quart and didn't even use it all.  Yes, it's oil based.  And, yes, it smells.  And, yes, I couldn't paint everyday due to the fumes and a slight headache when I painted.  But, the finish and the durability cannot be beat.

And, of course, I used a Purdy brush.

There you have it!  Up next, the kitchen cabinets.  Also, curtains and hardware have been ordered.  I saved and splurged on the curtains and hardware.  So, whenever we sell this house, tough they are coming with me.

    1. What a treasure.... I'm sure it took a lot of work. Thanks for the inspiration because I've been wanting to paint a fireplace surround. Now I feel like I can do it after seeing your piano project.

  10. Wow you did a great job! It looks new again and the finish is elegant like a grand piano! You are right about oil based paints- they can't be beat. My uncle used to paint all the windows and trim on the inside with oil based paint and they all held up beautifully.

  12. Looks brand new! Is it an old family heirloom or did you purchase it and then repaint it? It reminds me of a piano I learned to play on as a child.
